Stalking or Smart Marketing?

Twitter is a great way to reach a broad and hip user base.  However, businesses run the risk of alienating consumers if they continually offer deals to the masses in a particular city.  After all, Angelenos don’t want their feed crowded with coupons for a bakery located in NYC.  How to solve this problem?  LocalResponse.

LocalResponse targets users by providing advertisements to relevant businesses.  For example, if you’re going on a shopping binge and just checked into your local mall an offer may appear for a coupon to a fashion retailer located in the mall.

The startup has already achieved some impressive results: a recent campaign boasted a click-through rate of 22%.  For some perspective keep in mind that an average banner ad will often have a click-through rate of 0.1%.

Keep in mind that LocalResponse is a tool utilized by companies in order to target consumers.  While some individuals have expressed concerns regarding privacy the vast majority of people targeted by the product appear eager to redeem their coupons and extol the virtues of a favorite brand on Twitter.

Do you find the idea of Local Response creepy or intriguing?  Let us know in the comments.

Walk In and Get Rewarded

Foursquare is sometimes a hard sell because it lacks incentives.  Sure, badges are pretty and bragging rights as a virtual mayor may be fun, but it’s not exactly lucrative.  Fortunately, new kid on the block, shopkick, is here to make checking in rewarding.

Simply walking into a store will result in you receiving kicks and no, we aren’t talking about shoes.  Kicks are shopkick’s currency.  Furthermore, you can snag even more kicks by checking into retailers such as Macy’s, Wet Seal, and Target.  If you want additional kicks you can also scan the barcodes of featured products.

So, what can you buy with your kicks?  iTunes gift cards, 3D televisions, and Coach handbags are just a few of the many offerings from shopkick.

shopkick is currently available for iPhone and Android users.  The app is growing more each day and is a great way for customers to snag rewards just by shopping at your favorite stores.  So, what are you waiting for?  Get downloading and get shopping right now.

Checkin while in China with Louis Vuitton

In a move which may cause some Western capitalists to scratch their heads, Louis Vuitton has recently announced their intention to utilize a Foursquare-esque service in China.  The program, known as Jiepang, allows users to checkin during Jiepang’s travel exhibition at the National Museum of China.  In exchange, consumers will receive a branded Louis Vuitton badge.  Moreover, customers will then have the ability to browse Louis Vuitton’s brand page and score details regarding the retailer’s design process, as well as tips for rockin’ LV.

However, some may be wondering if such a partnership will even take off.  After all, how much value can a badge be on your profile?  The promotion runs from June 9 to August 30 and therefore, only time will tell if this will be successful or forgettable.

Do you think it’ll work and boost the brand or is this yet another example of companies not using social media efficiently?

Groupon + Foursquare=Match?

Are Groupon and Foursquare, two social media heavyweights, looking to join forces and integrate their technological brilliance? Both companies are considering, and it may not be a bad idea for them to link up.

Recognized for their deals offered on an every day basis via email, Groupon is a favorite among users. It has also helped businesses by promoting them continually.

At the moment, Groupon has expanded their social media outreach by stretching their services to mobile devices as well, with Groupon Now. The new mobile app, released earlier in the month, functions in the same way, locating deals in surrounding areas, except companies can now control when the deals will come to fruition to help the flow of business during slower periods.

Right now, Foursquare would benefit from the use of Groupon a lot, amplifying their current deal finding program. Groupon’s 85 million users would be a definite score. Groupon would also profit, especially when getting consumers to transition from receiving deals through email to getting them through their mobile device.

Before, Groupon hooked up with Loopt, a geo-social app, to provide location-based service, so it wouldn’t be any surprise if Groupon did form a joint venture with Foursquare.
