Social Media and Your Privacy

There are over 750 million active users on Facebook and there is over 175 million active users on Twitter. With all those people you can imagine that our safety on the internet decreases. Did you know that the photos you post are not really yours when you post them? And when you delete your profile it never really goes away? Facebook actually owns your profile after you delete it.

Be careful of what you post. It might actually get you in trouble. One instance a woman named Kimberly Swann was actually fired for commenting that her job was boring. Also those pictures of you drinking or posing sexy might get you in serious trouble at work with your boss.

Here are some privacy tips to keep you safe on the social media websites:

  • Make lists of personal and professional contacts so that you can control what they can or cannot see.
  • Learn how to untag yourself from photos.
  • Understand that if you participate in quizzes it will reveal information about you.
  • Learn how to block people.
  • Avoid over sharing on Twitter. Such as do we really need to know you had a fight with your spouse?

Also make sure to change your password often and make it impossible to figure out. When my Facebook was hacked it was definitely annoying but it can be easily avoided. And of course don’t share any personal information on the social media websites such as your address and phone number.

These are the basic tips on how to be safe on the social media websites. As your grandmother always told you, think before you talk, the same goes on the internet. Think before you post!

What are your tips on being safe on the social media websites? And what your views on the ever increasing privacy issues on Facebook and Twitter?

Lulzsec is Back! Takedown of the The Sun Newspaper and the News International Websites

Lulzsec is back! (This is like taking down Voldemort for my geeky Harry Potter compatriots). But seriously, the hacking group, also referred to in the past as a “cyber terrorism group” by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, made claims of hacking notable organizations such as the CIA website and user accounts for Sony. Now, they have targeted energy towards The Sun newspaper and other news international websites.

Lulzsec stated they hacked The Sun, redirecting users to a fake website asserting News Corps tycoon, Rupert Murdoch, was dead. In addition, it appears Lulzsec gained access to numerous emails of the News Corporation, the head honcho that owns The Sun.

How did Lulzsec hack and take readers on such a cyberspace adventure? A simple javascript redirect was rumored to be the culprit. Sources are still trying to confirm this.

Several news sites are shut down for the moment to avoid future havoc, including NewsInternational.co.uk, NewsInt.co.uk, and TheTimes.co.uk.

What is Lulzsec going to take down next?
