Of A Kind: Purchase Clothing on Tumblr

Of a Kind is a new retail web store that sells limited edition clothing and accessories exclusively on Tumblr. Each week there are two items that are sold exclusively from one designer. The prices range from $60 to $175. However, there are only 20-35 of the product sold so better get in their quick!

Besides just the item up for sale on the website, there is information on the designer, what they design and what other products they sell. They will also take the reader behind the scenes of the creative process. It will show readers how the designers make their pieces and where it all comes from.

Of a Kind started a year ago and now has over 35,000 users making it a very successful web-store. It has been featured on The Today Show, WWD, Los Angeles Times, W, and Daily Candy.

Of a Kind is a great innovative web store. It is a great way of finding out about new designers and for designers to showcase and promote their designs. Also owning exclusive products will make your wardrobe even more unique and fun. Everyone will be asking where did you get that?!

The Rise of Tumblr: A Microblogging Service Built by Spam and Porn

Fashionistas and angsty adolescents alike enjoy the freedom and community encouraged by Tumblr.  However, a recent piece on Gawker explored the microblogging site’s success.  Ryan Tate posited, “Tumblr’s explosive growth has been driven by huge quantities of porn and spam, and that seems to make the startup uncomfortable.”  So, why is this problematic?  Because it’s difficult to get funding when your site is notorious for its treasure trove of NSFW images.  Moreover, Tumblr users have routinely found themselves victim to various scams.  Both issues spell trouble for Tumblr because it could impact their longterm success, as well as their financial future.

First and foremost, the majority of Americans still frown on good ol’ fashioned “adult erotica.” Sure, Tumblr boasts an array of sites dedicated to showing us the goods au naturel in a tasteful and artistic way, but ultimately, those fronting cash don’t want to put money into a service which is heavily affiliated with porn.   Tumblr realizes that advertisers may want the site to squash the influx of such content, but doing so may alienate Tumblr’s user base.

Yet another factor spelling potential trouble for Tumblr is the potential for spam.  If Tumblr becomes riddled with spam the audience will quickly flock to another platform.  This is problematic for users of the site, as well as advertisers hoping to appeal to the tumbling set.

Ultimately, we’re in a social media bubble and it’s enlightening to see how our favorite sites have exploded onto the scene with so much promise, but have flamed out due to shifting audiences, changed priorities, and above all, a frantic pursuit for more funding.  We don’t know if Tumblr will follow suite, but we will be sitting on the edge of our seat to see how smut and spam will impact the site.

Oscar de la Renta Coming to a Tumblr Near You

Did you manage to score an invite to New York Fashion Week?  Me neither.  However, don’t fear because super luxe designer Oscar de la Renta has crowdsourced coverage of his Spring 2012 collection via everyone’s favorite image microblogging service: Tumblr.

The brand’s Tumblr will allow fashionistas, front row editors, and fans to upload images courtesy of the tag #odlrlive. Did we mention that it’s all in real time?  Moreover, a livestream of the runway show will play on the page, thus allowing all of us sitting at home to enjoy the Italian couturier’s tailored pieces.

The idea is yet another way of making fashion accessible to the masses, but in doing so Oscar de la Renta is running some very real risks.  Namely, isn’t part of the fun of designer brands the fact that it is exclusive?  Suddenly all of us plebes are privy to high end fashion and well, it suddenly doesn’t seem so special.  In addition, in our age of Fashion 21 copycats does it make sense to give the company ample notice of next year’s trends?

Will you be participating in Oscar de la Renta’s Tumblr madness?  What do you think the consequences are from crowdsourcing a runway show?  Is this the future of fashion?
